Karma Yoga is the spiritual path of selfless action, or "Seva." It involves performing work without attachment to the results, dedicating actions to a higher purpose or the well-being of others. The aim is to purify the heart, cultivate detachment, and experience unity through service.
While specific skills can be helpful for certain tasks (e.g., gardening, cooking, maintenance), the most important qualities are a willingness to serve, an open heart, and a positive attitude. We try to match participants with tasks suited to their abilities and interests.
Seva activities vary depending on the needs of our center but can include tasks like organic gardening, helping in the kitchen with meal preparation, general cleaning and maintenance of the property, assisting with retreat preparations, or light construction/repair projects.
A typical day includes morning meditation/yoga, breakfast, a morning Seva session, lunch, personal time/rest, an afternoon Seva session or workshop, dinner, and an evening Satsang (spiritual discourse) or meditation. The schedule is designed to balance work, spiritual practice, and rest.
We offer different Karma Yoga programs. Some involve a financial contribution to cover basic costs of food and accommodation, often at a reduced rate compared to regular retreats. Other, longer-term "Full Seva Immersion" programs may operate more on a work-exchange basis with a minimal fee. Please check the "Contribution Details" on the main retreat page or inquire for specifics.
This varies. Our "Community Contributor" program usually has a minimum commitment of one week. "Full Seva Immersion" programs often prefer longer commitments, such as one month or more, to allow for deeper integration. Short-term volunteer opportunities may also be available for 3-7 days. Please check specific program details.
Accommodation is typically in shared rooms or dormitories, though private options may be available for some programs at an additional cost. We provide wholesome, vegetarian/vegan meals, often prepared with ingredients from our own garden when possible, aligning with Ayurvedic principles.
Yes, the schedule includes time for personal reflection, rest, and often opportunities to join regular yoga classes or explore the natural surroundings. The amount of free time will depend on the specific program and daily Seva requirements.
Please visit the "Learn More & Apply" or "Inquire & Apply" links on the main Karma Yoga Retreat page. This will typically lead you to a contact form or an application form where you can express your interest and provide some information about yourself. We review applications to ensure a good fit for our community and programs.
