Yoga Teacher Training Questions: Common Doubts & Real Talk | Hari OM
Key Takeaways
Deciding to embark on a YTT is a major life investment. This guide addresses the most common worries students face, from physical readiness to finding a community.
I’ve stood exactly where you are. I’ve been the nervous student clutching a worn-out mat, the curious seeker living in an Indian ashram for three years (talk about a reality check!), and now, the founder and lead teacher of a yoga school.
I’ve taken multiple 200-hour courses, a 300-hour in India, SUP yoga, aerial yoga—you name it, I’ve likely cried and had a breakthrough during it. The decision to embark on a Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) is a big one. It’s an investment of time, money, and most importantly, your heart. It’s natural for the “what ifs” to start swirling.
While every school is different—and I highly encourage you to reach out and chat with any school you’re considering—there are universal truths that apply to any authentic program focused on a genuine yogic path. My advice? Look past the “cutesy” artisanal photos and the buzzword-heavy marketing. Dig deeper. Feel the energy of the place.
Here is my honest take on the most common worries I hear from students before they join us.
1 Am I flexible, strong, or “advanced” enough for Yoga Teacher Training?
If a school is focused on your path as a yogi and teaching you how to guide others, this doesn’t matter. Yoga is not a competition, a fitness challenge, or a marathon (and I say that as someone who has run several). It is an inward journey.

What actually helps is:
- Fundamental knowledge of asana from a consistent practice.
- Knowing your own body and its limits.
- Experience in a live, physical studio space. Online is great, but the energy of a shared room makes a world of difference.
If you have injuries or physical limitations, honestly? Even better. In our trainings, we lean into that. We learn from our own bodies and share that knowledge. There is nothing more “real” or compassionate than a teacher who understands the mechanics of a body that isn’t “perfect.”
2 Am I spiritually advanced enough for YTT?
This is the same question as the physical one, just more subtle. Spirituality isn’t a race. However, a proper training should dive into philosophy, history, sadhana, meditation, and ritual. If it doesn’t, it’s not a yoga training—it’s a fitness certification. All you need is an open mind and an open heart.
3 Am I too old or too young for Yoga Teacher Training?
I’ve graduated a 17-year-old and a 69-year-old. I’ve seen gap-year explorers find their footing and retirees rediscover their purpose.

Many retreats focus on a specific “niche” age group, but I personally believe variety is the magic ingredient. We don’t discriminate by age because bringing diverse backgrounds together allows for deeper sharing. Whether you are a college student or a woman in her prime, you deserve an immersive educational experience.
4 Will I find my community or “tribe” during the training?
I’ll give you two answers here:
Community is vital. We work hard to facilitate a space where people feel seen and respected.
It doesn’t matter. I know that sounds harsh, but hear me out: Often, people come to a YTT looking for a connection with others. But the person you are truly looking to connect with is yourself.
We’ve seen it all—lifelong friendships, social media acquaintances, and yes, even the occasional quarrel (we keep it real here; it’s human nature!). I’ve even seen people fall in love in Costa Rica! But I don’t recommend coming to a YTT looking for romance or a party.
When you shift your perspective away from “Will they like me?” to “How can I show up for myself?”, the judgment vanishes. You put your defenses down, and ironically, that’s when the most authentic connections happen.
5 Is Yoga Teacher Training too intense for me?
Is it intense? Yes. Is it emotional? Often. Is it a “suffering camp”? Absolutely not.
Every student secretly (or not-so-secretly) curses us when we start memorizing Sanskrit terms or anatomy. That’s why we send homework and prep material—we want you to succeed!
Yoga and meditation, when done right, are meant to be transformational. They shake things up. Your journey will depend entirely on your willingness to show up. Be kind to yourself, be compassionate to others, and don’t expect your teachers to solve your problems for you (though we are here to hold the space while you do the work).
Final Thoughts

I wouldn’t be an eternal student if I didn’t believe in this process. I’ve had the tears, the breakthroughs, and the exhaustion. We wouldn’t run this school if we didn’t flourish in watching our students grow.
If you feel the pull, don’t let the “what ifs” stop you. Research, ask the hard questions, and then—when it feels right—step onto the mat.
The journey is waiting.
